State Staircase (start of the tour)

The southern staircase keeps closely to its model, the Ambassadors’ Staircase (Escalier des Ambassadeurs) at Versailles, which was built in 1671 by F. d’Orbay and demolished in 1752. The structure of the walls, which are clad in marble and stucco marble in various colours, exactly follows the original at Versailles, as seen from plans and engravings, but the enclosing glass roof completely transforms its character.
